Southeast Education Students Awarded SMSTA Service Project of the Year for Jefferson Elementary Literacy Walk

Southeast Missouri State University's Student Missouri State Teachers Association (SMSTA) was recently honored with the SMSTA Service Project of the Year award during the 2019 Missouri State Teachers Association conference. Southeast's SMSTA was recognized for a literacy walk project to promote literacy and the joy of reading at Jefferson Elementary School in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

Southeast Students, Faculty Conduct Speech, Hearing Screenings at Lift for Life Academy

Eighteen graduate students and five faculty supervisors from Southeast Missouri State University's Department of Communication Disorders recently provided hearing, speech and language screenings to 110 students in kindergarten through second grade at the Lift for Life Academy in St. Louis, Missouri.

Southeast Announces Homecoming 2019 Winners

Southeast Missouri State University has announced its 2019 Homecoming winners, including Man and Woman of the Year, overall and float winners. Justin Jacobs, a senior from Barnhart, Missouri, and Francesca Bucci, a senior from Gurnee, Illinois, were crowned the 2019 Man and Woman of the Year at halftime of the Southeast Homecoming football game on Saturday, Oct. 26, on Houck Field.

Southeast Announces Hult Prize 2020 Challenge Winners

The winners of the inaugural Hult Prize Challenge at Southeast Missouri State University were announced at a Common Hour program Nov. 6. This year's challenge topic was "Bold Businesses for a Better Planet." Participating teams, using the topic as inspiration, created startup businesses that have a positive impact on the planet with every sale completed, dollar earned and decision made. The Douglas C. Green Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship hosted the competition.

Six female Southeast Missouri State University undergraduate economics students joined other female students of economics at the "Economics and Women" colloquium Oct. 18 at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. The students are members of Southeast's Women in Economics organization and traveled to the colloquium with their faculty advisor Dr. Natallia Gray, associate professor of economics.

Southeast Theatre Student Selected to Perform in Alabama Shakespeare Festival

Southeast Missouri State University student Jay Wade has landed a leading role in the Alabama Shakespeare Festival's (ASF) production of "Pipeline," Oct. 17-27 in Montgomery, Alabama. Wade, a senior theatre major, acting option, from St. Louis, Missouri, will be playing Omari in this powerful play that delves into the issue of the "school-to-prison" pipeline that can ensnare people of color.

Southeast Missouri State University student Francesca Bucci is combining her passion for comedy and public relations this summer as a marketing and design intern at Stage773 in Chicago, Illinois. Bucci, a senior double majoring in mass media, public relations option, and theatre, acting option, from Gurnee, Illinois, says she feels right at home on the stage, bringing beloved characters to life and even making audiences laugh and forget their worries for a little while. But there's a lot of work that goes on behind the curtain, and Bucci is getting a front row seat to see what it takes to run a successful performance and tenant venue.

But Southeast Missouri State University sophomore Delilah Sayer isn't letting that deter her from learning more about the insect at Washington University's Tyson Research Center where she's examining climate change's impact on parasite prevalence in mosquitoes' and their ability to transmit disease.

Southeast Computer Science Student Goes Behind the Code with Amazon

Southeast Missouri State University student Grant Reid is getting a bird's eye view of the world's largest e-commerce company this summer, serving as a software development engineer intern with Amazon in Seattle, Washington. Reid, a senior computer science major with a minor in mathematics of Pleasant Plains, Illinois, works with Amazon Web Service's (AWS) Cognito team. As a subsidiary of Amazon, AWS provides on-demand cloud computing platforms to individuals, companies and governments. The Cognito team specifically helps companies, large and small, with authentication, authorization and user management services for web and mobile apps.

It's not surprising that Jenna has immersed herself this summer in a National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at the University of Iowa College of Medicine in Iowa City, Iowa, where she is working with researchers to better understand Neonatal Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) - a serious gastrointestinal disease in premature infants.

Southeast Missouri State University student Erika Bone is rubbing elbows with lawmakers in the nation's capital this summer, learning the vital role of constituent relations, as she charts a future career in campaigns and public policy. Adrienne Brauer knows all about preparation, cadence, tempo and pace as a long-distance runner on the cross country and track teams at Southeast Missouri State University. This summer, though, she's repurposing those skills off the course in a National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) at Washington University in St. Louis where she's working with Dr. Petra Levin, biology professor and co-director of the plant and microbial biosciences graduate program, putting in the hours, preparing for graduate school and earning the experience for a career centered in microbiology research.
