Southeast Biology Major Seeking Breakthrough in NSF Summer Research

Southeast Missouri State University senior Jenna Klingebiel is a self-described "biology nerd." It's not surprising that Jenna has immersed herself this summer in a National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at the University of Iowa College of Medicine in Iowa City, Iowa, where she is working with researchers to better understand Neonatal Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) - a serious gastrointestinal disease in premature infants.

Southeast Student Gaining Political Insights in Sen. Blunt's D.C. Office

Southeast Missouri State University student Erika Bone is rubbing elbows with lawmakers in the nation's capital this summer, learning the vital role of constituent relations, as she charts a future career in campaigns and public policy. Bone is interning in the Washington, D.C., office of U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt of Missouri, building on previous experiences she gained working in his Cape Girardeau office.

Southeast Student Exploring E. Coli DNA Replication in NSF Summer Research

Adrienne Brauer knows all about preparation, cadence, tempo and pace as a long-distance runner on the cross country and track teams at Southeast Missouri State University. This summer, though, she's repurposing those skills off the course in a National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) at Washington University in St. Louis where she's working with Dr. Petra Levin, biology professor and co-director of the plant and microbial biosciences graduate program, putting in the hours, preparing for graduate school and earning the experience for a career centered in microbiology research.

Southeast Renews Exchange with UDLA as Students Explore Ecuadoran Healthcare

Southeast Missouri State University officials renewed a formal exchange agreement last week with the Universidad de las Americas (UDLA) in Quito, Ecuador. As partner institutions, Southeast and the Universidad de las Americas Granados work closely to encourage students to participate in short- and long-term study abroad at both Southeast in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and UDLA in Ecuador.

Southeast Students, Alumni Hitting it Out of the Park with Cape Catfish

Several Southeast Missouri State University students have cast their hopes on the new Cape Catfish baseball team, intent on reeling in a treasure-trove of learning opportunities with the organization this summer. Four Southeast seniors and five recent graduates are interning and working with the team, learning how to build an athletic organization from the ground up - an undeniable experience in the sports industry. The organization debuted in Cape Girardeau with its home opener June 4 at Capaha Field.

To say that Southeast Missouri State University graduating senior Connor McGarr was sought after in the job market for his cybersecurity prowess is an understatement. The Cape Girardeau native will cross the stage during commencement exercises May 11, closing the book on his undergraduate career and opening a new chapter as a consultant with Big Four accounting firm Ernst and Young in Houston, Texas. McGarr will put his skills to work providing consulting services to clients who purchase the firm's cybersecurity services.

Southeast Nursing Students Pilot New Tissue, Organ Donation Education Program

Senior nursing students in the "Introduction to Critical Care" course at Southeast Missouri State University have spent the spring semester piloting a first-of-its-kind online program on tissue and organ donation. The initiative, "Organ and Tissue Donor Education for Undergraduate Nursing Students," is made possible thanks to a generous grant awarded to Southeast Missouri State University by Mid-America Transplant (MT) in St. Louis, Missouri, the first organization in the world to have a retrieval center for organ and tissue donation.
